Abstract

The main purpose of this study was to verify if the Scales of subtle and blatant Prejudice (Pettigrew & Meertens, 1995) were valid for the detection of prejudicial attitudes in our country. To this end two social groups, targets of prejudice, were selected that had a significant presence in our region: Bolivian immigrants and native ethnics. The sample was formed by 324 high school students, belonging to different educational  settings, public and private in the region of Antofagasta city. The results obtained from an analysis of the data indicated that the scale could be reliable as a masure of prejudice towards the evaluated groups. Besides, significant differences were found in most of the related variables between the high and low scores, which were used as indicatores of validity. In sum, the scales should be a good instrument to evaluate the new forms of the prejudice in our national context.
